Azerbaijan Academic Drama Theater

 On 10th of March and 17th of April, 1873, under G.B Zardabi’s , N.B  Vizirov’s and A. Adigezalov’s (Corani) initiative with the active    involvement of  M.F Akhundov set at the Baku stage the comedy - "Vizier  of Lenkorans  Khanate” and “Haji Kara”. Founded in 1920, first as Azeri  Joint State Theatre  troupe, also since 1922 included Russian and Armenian  troupe, received final  clearance. Until 1929, was named Academic Drama  Theatre, and then in 1935-  the Art Theatre; since 1950–modern name. In  1933- gave the name of  M.Azizbekov.In present building the shows    offered’s since 1960. 

In 1920, in the theatre performances were as follows: Akhundov’s - "Haji Kara", D.Mamedguluzade’s "The deadmen", Shakespeare’s - "Hamlet", Treneva’s - "Spring Love", and others. In 30 years Dzhabarly’s - "Almas", "Yashar", Gahman’s- “Weddings”, Siyavush’s - "Javid, Vurgun’s - "Vagif". In 40-s G.Rza’s - "Vafa", Ibragimov’s - "Mahabbat", Vurgun’s - "Shirin and Farhad", Huseyn’s - "Nizami". In 50-s- Seidbeyli and Kasumova’s - "On the distant shores", Shakespeare’s – “Otello”, and others. In 60-s – Tolstoy’s -"The living dead", Shakespeare’s- "Antony and Cleopatra".     

He was awarded the Order of Lenin (1974) and the Order of the Red Banner of Labor (1949).

Russian Drama Theatre 

Azerbaijan State Russian Drama Theatrenamed  Samed Vurgun (450 seats), organized in 1923  on the basis of the Bakus free satire-troupes (in  1920). Originally itcalled the Baku working  theatre (BRT). In 1937, named the Azerbaijani  State Russian Drama Theatre. In 1956, gave  the name S. Vurgun. 

 Since middle of 20’s theatre modern drama ( "Lyubov Yarovaya"-Treneva, 1926, "Kremlin chiming clock"-Pogodin, 1941 and 1956) and also works of classic "Three Sisters”-1946," Seagull”-1960,Chekhov, "Masquerade"- Lermontov, 1934,1959). A special place take part plays of azeri playwrights ( "Sevil"- in 1930, "The Bride of fire"- 1933, D.Dzhabarly "Farhad and Shirin”-1947,S. Vurgun, “Sunrise on Caspian"- 1951,Kasumova).  

Theatre of opera and ballet 

 Baku is one of the largest industrial and cultural  centres in the East; but it is also a city of many  museums and architectural monuments.In the  very centre of Baku , amids the greenery of the  sea-side boulevard stands this building so well  known to lovers of music. Thousands of people  visit Baku each year having heard of the Opera  House’s beauty and eager to visit it. 
 Theatrical life in Baku has a long history , and the Opera and Ballet House is the oldest of the theatres . For a whole century the theatre has been one of the centre`s of the republic`s cultural life and the focus of the best in opera and ballet in Azerbaijan. Many internationally famous figures have graced its stage? Among them Fedor Shalyapin, Leonid Sobinov , Valeriya Barsova, Irina Arkhipova, Elena Obraztsova, Virgilius Noreyka, Maria Bieshu, Zurab Sotkilava, Vladislav Piavko , Maya Plisetskaya,Vyacheslav Gordeev, Irina Kolpakova all of whom feel honoured by being invited to Baku. The building was constructed in 1910 by a well-known construction engineer, Babayev. 

Theatre musical comedy 

Azerbaijan State Theatre musical comedy named Shihali Kurbanova (343 seats). Azerbaijani Popular musical comedy genre emerged in the early of 20 century. As opera that genre emerged after the creation of Hajibeyov. His comedy -"Husband and wife", written in 1909, was offered in 1910. In subsequent years, represented Hajibeyovs musical comedies- "That impossible, it possible"-(1911), "Arshin Mal Alan"-(1913). Before the revolution were represented Hajibeyovs comedy "50 years young man", "Married bachelor", Kazymovs- "Molla Jabi, Vurhavur." The source of these comedies are feudal - patriarchal attitudes, social equality, women's rights, corruption, ignorance, etc. Before 1938, the musical comedy was shown in the Theater of Opera and Ballet. Since 1938, - The Independent Music Comedy Theatre. In 1967, the theater was given the name L.Gurbanova. 

Theatre of young spectator 

 Azerbaijan State Theatre Young Spectator (433 places) - professional theater for children's audience. Created in 1928 as a Theatre of Baku child. Since 1936,function as Azerbaijan State Theatre younger audience. Since 1932, in the theatre's repertoire works azeri authors: "In the street" (J. Jafarov, S. Melikeganov), "Speed" (A. Atayev), etc. In 1940, in Moscow at all-USSR festival of Young theaters, our theatre get a well-deserved prize with performances as "Partisan Mamed"(S.Rahman, A.Iskenderov) and "Seyran"(E.Atayev, A.Ahmedov). For younger students developed theatrical fairy tale genre, which combines folklore and fantasy with elements of contemporary reality ( "Snow Queen"- Swartz, "12 months"-Marshak); adventure plays, comedies at the core repertoire for teenagers. 

Puppet Theatre 

Azerbaijan State Puppet Show named Abdullah Shaig (210 seats),was formed in 1931. In different years it was acted as: Independent Theatre (1931-1941; 1946-1950); Azerbaijani theater of young spectator (1941-1946)and within Azerbaijan State Philharmonic (1950). Since 1965 -Independent Theatre. There are Azerbaijani and Russian offices. In the first period there were put on theatre stage Azerbaijani, Russian and Western European theatrical plays, the Azerbaijani people's oral literary motifs: "Haji Kara" (Akhundov), "Almas"(J. Dzhabarly), "Iskander and shepherd", "Karlik", " Nargiz”(M.Seid-zade), etc. Since 60-70 years theatre began to present repertoire for small children, schoolchilds. Since 1975, theatre put on stage plays for adult viewers: "Three tales" (A. Shaig), "Twin brothers" (H. Zia), "This house whose house?" (R.Geydar) and etc. In 1974 theater was given the name of A.Shaig. In theatrical representations operate puppets (large and flat), driven by actor-puppeteers, hidden from viewers fronts. Many forms of representations are determined distinguish types of dolls, their management: puppets (dolls at threads), crown dolls (gloves), mechanical. Dolls come in size from a few centimetres to double human growth. The distinction forms and patterns driven by perceptions of national tradition, the specifics dramatic-stage tasks. Beginning of theater puppets- in pagan rites, plays with materialized symbols of gods, personification unknown forces of nature.
